Intel to ditch motherboard business

Partners to soldier on

Intel has announced that it will gradually halt production of Intel-brand motherboards over the next three years.

The move will coincide with the introduction of Haswell and the upcoming platform could be the last generation of Intel motherboards. The whole market will be left wide open for companies like Asus, Gigabyte, MSI and others, but you won’t be able to get an Intel branded board in a few years.

In the announcement, Intel states that its desktop motherboard business will begin “slowly ramping down” over the next three years, but the company will maintain its presence in the desktop space, through reference design development and NUC.

“Intel’s Desktop Motherboard Business will not develop any new Intel branded desktop motherboards after completion of Haswell-based 4th gen Core launch products in 2013 and will continue to support all products sold through the warranty period included with the specific product,” that’s the word out of Santa Clara.

Intel claims the desktop segment will continue to be a major focus for the company in the future.
