As we have been hearing rumblings about for some time, Gears of War 3 is in development and is finally far enough along that none other than Cliff Blezinski (CliffyB) will be taking off the wraps on the Jimmy Fallon show. Originally, CliffyB was supposed to appear last night, but his appearance was bumped to next Monday night instead.

From what our sources tell us, the Locusts will be at it again (of course) in Gears 3 and the darker brown-gray will be traded for the green and yellow of the summer in the jungle. It is said that gamers can expect heavy foliage as well as some underwater stuff.

Our boys will be getting some new abilities, including some new explosive devices that are said to be able to go underground and into enemy hiding places. Of course, the mech suit will be upgraded and you can expect some other new abilities as well. Updates in both abilities and weapons are in store for the Locusts, including their ability to use their tentacles to wreak all kinds of havoc knocking things down or over.

Our sources say that Gears 3 is on track and has been in development for some time, so it is a bit further along than suspected. The two remaining questions that no one seems to have the answer to yet are (1) when we can expect Gears 3 and (2) whether or not there will be a PlayStation 3 version of the game as has been rumored. We believe that it is possible that Gears 3 will arrive for the holiday season, according to our sources, but it is more likely that it is an early 2011 title. As for the possibility of a PS3 version, the mole we spoke with seems to think that this is impossible and isn’t going to happen. Sorry, PS3 fans, looks like no Gears 3 for you.
