Chipzilla's Raptor Lake CPUs are extinct

by on15 April 2024

Meets its meteor

Chipzilla, also known as Intel, is ringing the death knell for its overclockable Core i5, i7, and i9 Raptor Lake CPUs. The K-series lineup is set to become tech fossils after 24 May 2024, with vendors getting their last chance to snap them up.

The countdown has begun, with the final shipments of these legendary chips flying off on 28 June, 2024. But don't expect these chips to vanish overnight. Like the last crumbs of a biscuit tin, they'll slowly disappear, possibly with price tags ballooning as they become rare collectables, making this your last chance to secure them.

Oddly, Chipzilla hasn't discontinued its older Alder Lake chips. They're still strutting their stuff as "launched" on Noah’s Ark.

Raptor Lake burst onto the scene in 2022, flexing more E-cores and clock speeds than you can poke a stick at, leaving AMD's Ryzen 7000 eating its dust. The Raptor Lake Refresh was a damp squib, barely nudging the performance needle, except for the i7s, which got a little E-core boost.

The good part about it is that Intel’s 14th-gen CPUs are starting to shed those hefty price tags. And while Raptor Lake's standard models are still up for grabs, their days are numbered.

Here's a roll call of the soon-to-be-gone legends:

  • Core i9-13900KS
  • Core i9-13900K
  • Core i9-13900KF
  • Core i7-13700K
  • Core i7-13700KF
  • Core i5-13600K
  • Core i5-13600KF

In a weird bit of side news, the cocaine nose jobs of Wall Street have given their thumbs up to the move and Intel’s share price went up on the move. Wall Street was happy that Intel was culling its chip range.  However, it is a mystery why it should be happy Intel is keeping the much older chips Alder Lake chips available.
