Google Wallet finally hits the street

Google has finally let its latest solution loose on the unsuspecting public, the much awaited Google Wallet. The idea is simple, Google Wallet integrates credit card information on Android phones, allowing users to spend money they don’t have on things they don’t need with greater ease.

Google Wallet can also store discount cards and coupons and it allows users to make transactions using near-field communication (NFC). We don’t know whether it will support food stamps. However, the service is currently limited to owners of Sprint Nexus S 4G phones and Google has struck deals with Visa and MasterCard. In addition, NFC terminals are pretty rare.

This basically means that most users simply won’t have a chance to test the new service just yet and it will take some time for all parties to create a viable infrastructure that will eventually allow the service to make much sense.

Of course, by the time the infrastructure is in place, there is a chance we will be living in a barter economy and melting down our gadgets for scraps of precious metals. (See, you didn’t have to make fun of Greece when talking about credit. sub.ed.)
