LG-made Nexus 5X and Huawei-made Nexus 6P

During its press event, Google has officially unveiled its two new Nexus smartphones, the LG-made 5.2-inch Nexus 5X and the Huawei-made 5.7-inch Nexus 6P.

Although all details have pretty much leaked before the official launch, Google went on and officially unveiled its new devices, including two Nexus smartphones, the all new Chromecast and Chromecast audio as well as the shiny new 10.2-inch Pixel C flagship tablet.

The LG-made Nexus 5X is Google's new mainstream smartphone. Designed around a 5.2-inch IPS LCD 1920x1080 resolution screen (424ppi), protected by Gorilla Glass 3, the new Nexus 5X is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 808 SoC, a hexa-core part based on two Cortex A57 and four Cortex A53 CPU cores and Adreno 418 GPU. The new Nexus 5X also comes with 2GB of RAM and either 16GB of 32GB of internal non-expandable storage.

The precise dimensions of the Nexus 5X are set at 147x72.6x7.9mm with136g of weight, which makes it thinner but also a bit heavier compared to the Nexus 5 released back in 2013. The added weight can be contributed to both the fingerprint sensor on the back and a larger 2700mAh battery.

The rest of the specifications and features include a 12.3-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, IR laser-assisted auto focus and dual flash, 5-megapixel front camera, aforementioned fingerprint sensor at the back, single front-facing speaker, three microphones and standard connectivity features, including 4G LTE, 802.11ac WiFi (2x2 MIMO), Bluetooth 4.2, NFC and GPS/GLONASS. It also comes with USB Type-C connector.

In addition to the Nexus 5X, Google also unveiled its new phablet, the Huawei-made Nexus 6P. Featuring a 5.7-inch AMOLED QHD (2560x1440) resolution screen (518ppi), protected by Gorilla Glass 4 and an all-metal unibody. Thanks to that same metal unibody design, the Google Nexus 6P measures 159x4x77.8x7.3mm and weighs 178g.

Unlike the Nexus 5X, the Nexus 6P has front-facing stereo speakers and is powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 810 SoC. We intentionally said the new Snapdragon 810 SoC as we are looking at v2.1 refresh of the SoC which is should not have any overheating problems. In case you missed it, this an octa-core SoC with four Cortex-A53 and four Cortex-A57 CPU cores paired up with Adreno 430 GPU. The Nexus 6P also packs 3GB of RAM and will be available with 32, 64 and 128GB of internal storage space.

The Nexus 6P also comes with the same 12.3-megapixel rear camera, just as the Nexus 5X but has a beefier 8-megapixel front camera, which should appeal to selfie lovers. It also has a fingerprint sensor on the back as well as the USB Type-C connector. The 3450mAh battery should offer decent amount of battery life while the connectivity options are pretty much identical to the Nexus 5X.

As expected, both new Google Nexus smartphones will be running on Google's latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS.

The Google Nexus 5X will be available for pre-order as of today with a price set at US $379.99 for the 16GB model and US $429 for the 32GB model. The Google Nexus 6P is also up for pre-order and is priced at US $499 for the 32GB model, US $549 for the 64GB one and US $649 for the 128GB one.

According to early reports, both smartphones are expected to ship sometime in late October. Google also now offers the new Nexus Protect insurance for US $69 for the Nexus 5X and US $89 for the Nexus 6P.

It again appears that the continental Europe and the UK drew a shorter straw as the Nexus 5X could cost around €479/£339 for the 16GB version while the Nexus 6P starts at €649 in Europe and £449 in the UK.
