There is a myth in the Apple cult that once you buy one of its shiny toys you will be a dedicated follower for the rest of your miserable life. However a new statistic suggests that is not quite, but completely untrue.

Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) has added up the numbers and divided by its shoe size and worked out that Fandroids have become more dedicated over the last two years.

The figures show that 82 percent of Android smartphone users remained loyal to Google's mobile during the two years ending Q2 2015, compared with 78 percent of iOS users who held onto their iPhones no matter what the cost.

CIRP said that Android retention rate increased noticeably, from 77 percent of customers purchasing new phones in the 2013-2014 period. The iPhone's retention rate, on the other hand, slipped slightly from 79 percent.

Josh Lowitz, partner and co-founder of CIRP said conventional wisdom says the Apple ecosystem promotes loyalty, while Android readily gives up users to iOS.

"Our analysis has a more nuanced view on operating system selection, and indicates Android user loyalty has caught up and even exceeds that of iOS."

CIRP's figures show that 20 percent of Android users switched from iOS between 2013 and 2015, while 16 percent of iPhone users moved to iOS from Android.

The survey revealed that just 19 percent of those using Microsoft's mobile OS stuck with it. Some 45 percent switched to Android, and 35 percent to iOS.

BlackBerry retained just four percent of smartphone users during the 48-month period. CIRP data showed that 39 percent of BlackBerry users switched to Android, 50 percent to iOS and seven percent to Windows.
