Qualcomm applies for smartwatch trademark

Tick TOQ

Qualcomm has applied for a smartwatch and the name is rather strange, the Qualcomm TOQ. We’re not sure what TOQ actually stands for, but that’s just part of the problem, as we’re not sure what it actually is.

Qualcomm describes the TOQ as a "Personal communication hub in the form of a wristwatch; portable electronic devices for transmitting and reviewing text, data, image, and audio files; hands free devices for mobile phones; battery chargers."

That’s basically a description that should fit every smartwatch under development, so we’re not sure how Qualcomm plans to differentiate its product from competing designs from Apple, Sony, Foxconn and others. Furthermore we're not sure it's an actual product, as Qualcomm doesn't really do consumer gear. It sounds like a platform for other vendors to use.

In related news, Apple also registered a smartwatch trademark in Taiwan, Russia, Japan and Mexico. Surprising no-one who did not spend the last decade in a coma, Cupertino’s device will be called the iWatch.
