3D NAND starting at $100

Samsung's new mainstream SSD series is now available and in case you missed it, we caught an early glimpse of Samsung SSD 850 EVO drives a few weeks ago.

The new series is based on 3D NAND, or to be more specific 128Gbit 40nm TLC V-NAND produced in-house. The drives offer sequential read and write speeds of 540MB/s and 520MB/s respectively, with up to 98K/90K read/write IOPS on the flagship 1TB unit.

Four capacities are available. The 120GB unit is priced at $100, while the 250GB model has an MSRP of $150. The big 500GB and 1TB drives are priced at $270 and $500. The 250GB clearly hits the sweet spot in terms of pricing, although the 120GB isn't bad either - but then again you can get more than double the capacity for 50% more cash.

The 1TB model uses a Samsung MEX controller, while the rest of the series is based on MGX controllers.

We have a couple of samples in our Vienna lab and we should have some performance figure soon. On the whole, the series looks like a nice upgrade to the 840 EVO, which was one of the most popular SSD series last year.
