Rumour: Radeon R9 R390X priced at $700+

by on16 March 2015

Priciest single-GPU Radeon yet?

The upcoming Radeon R9 R390X could be the most expensive single-GPU AMD graphics card to date, excluding professional solutions, of course.

According to German tech news site Heise.de, the new flagship could end up with an MSRP north of $700. That would make it significantly more expensive than the R9 290X and Nvidia’s GTX 980. This would be a change of pace for AMD, as the company usually prices its flagships somewhat lower than Nvidia.

At the same time, it suggests that AMD is very confident about the card’s performance – and let’s face it, AMD is not a charity – if it ends up substantially faster than the GTX 980, it’s safe to assume AMD will charge more for it. Fudzilla has managed to learn that the new card is more than 30% faster than Nvidia’s Maxwell-based GTX 980, so the price sounds realistic.

In addition to the flagship R9 390, Heise.de reports that the R9 380X should cost around $400. This would make it a direct successor to the 290-series, more or less. The performance segment should also be covered by the R9 370, which should cost about $200 and deliver performance somewhere in between the R9 270X and R9 285. The R7 series will start at about $110 for the R7 360, while the R7 360 will end up at $150.

Most of the prices are in line with expectations, with the 390 series effectively carving out a new price tier for AMD, well above the current 290-series.

The big question is how many 300-series Radeons will be based on new silicon. Most of them are bound to be rebrands, with somewhat higher clocks.
