Team of hackers blackmails Apple

Will Apple get the works? That's nobody's business but the Turks

A team of hackers is blackmailing Apple has is threatening to wipe millions of iPhones, including iCloud accounts, unless the company agrees to pay a ransom before April 7.

Needless to say the Tame Apple Press is furious at the hackers and is demanding that they be found, crucified at every mile stone leading to the Cupertino space ship headquarters of the Fruity Cargo cult.

The cybercriminals identify themselves as the "Turkish Crime Family". They are demanding $75,000 in Bitcoin or Ethereum (another rising crypto-currency), or $100,000 worth of iTunes gift cards, in exchange for deleting the alleged data they have collected.

At no point has the Tame Apple Press thought, hang on this figure is a bit low given what these hackers claim they can do.

To prove that they mean business, the "Turkish Crime Family" uploaded a YouTube video of them logging in from one of the compromised accounts. It is said the accessed iCloud account is that of an elderly woman, and it holds backed-up photos. The remote wiping of the device is enabled on the account as well.

Apple is doing its best to look like it is in control and “does not give in to terrorists” but secretly it must be a little worried. We have been waiting for a hack like this to appear for a while, but the level of money concerned makes even us believe it is just a scam.

The idea is Apple will pay a small ransom and not notice.

Motherboard notes some inconsistencies with the hackers' statements; according to one of the emails, they claim to have access to over 300 million Apple email accounts, including those with @icloud and @me domains. However, another declaration from the group said that they had a total of 559 million accounts stolen.

Other than the old woman's account, there is no strong evidence that the group has indeed millions of accounts with an ability to wipe all of them in just a few taps.  Still we have marked April 7 and we can but hope.
