Chinese invent graphene electronic paper

Smartphone world about to be shaken up

China, which gave the world traditional paper, has come up with a successor which could shake up electronic gadgets such as wearable devices and e-readers.

This particular type of paper is made from graphene which is super light and strong. The electronic paper has been made by Guangzhou OED Technologies in partnership with another company in the Chongqing Province.

The paper is 0.335 nanometers thick and can be used to create hard or flexible graphene displays. Graphene e-paper can conduct heat and electricity, and it can supposedly enhance optical displays to a brighter level, owing to its high-light transmittance properties.

Graphene-based e-papers can be easily produced cost-effectively given that it is derived from carbon. At the moment e-paper is made from indium metal  which is very expensive and rare.

It had been figured if you could use graphene for electronic displays you could create high-end unbreakable smartphone touchscreens. Touchscreens that use graphene as conductors can make smartphones so thin they could be folded and then slipped into a pocket.  The touchscreens can be shatter-proof.

We still need to see what happens though. It will take a year before the paper is made and longer for it to end up in products.
