Facebook open sources its artificial intelligence

Because everyone wants Facebook’s intelligence

Social notworking site Facebook has announced it will open source its artificial intelligence (AI) hardware.

Now before you rush to see if you can wire up the volcano from your secret base to power your new open saucy artificial intelligence super-computer to take over the world, it is important we remind you that this is the sort of intelligence which looks for nipples in photographs.

Needless to say the hardware is high-end server called Big Sur which appears to be so intelligent it can’t spell Sir. It uses Nvidia technology which is legendary for its intelligence, and it can run AI algorithms.

Facebook uses it for facial recognition, news feed curation, and personal assistant features at Facebook.

However for all the sarcasm it all makes perfect sense. Deep learning and AI overall are still relatively small fields and that's the main reason why these companies are open sourcing their hardware. That way they can get lots of people to work on it.

Facebook, Google, and Microsoft have all open sourced their AI doings in the hope that some smart types will work on them. Facebook has shared its AI hardware with the Open Compute Project, which shares designs for computer infrastructure.
