Next insider Windows 10 beta next week

Cortana, new browser and Xbox games on PC stream

Microsoft has made an epic decision. After upsetting millions with Windows 8, fixing major things with Windows 8.1, Redmond now plans to provide Windows 10 as a free upgrade.

Windows 10 will be a free update for all Windows 7, Windows 8.1  and Windows 8.1 Phone devices. The option is valid for a year after the announcement and we expect to see Windows 10 in late summer to October 2015 at the latest.

We don’t know if this is forced by the fact that Apple gives its users free OS X upgrades, but we think that this has be related to the fact that Windows users really want a proper Start menu.

The new thing that will be available with next week's Windows 10 insider beta release is the Cortana voice command feature. You can speak to your tablet, notebook, desktop or anything that runs on Windows 10. We don’t think that this is a game changer, but it will be nice to get a quick answer about a sports score, the weather, celebrity gossip or just set reminders. You can use it to dictate an email and we look forward to giving it a try. The only task where I use Google Now is to set a reminder when I need to renew my parking fee, or when I am making spaghetti so I don’t overcook them. Now I will have that option on my desktop too.

We just think Cortana is not user friendly name. You should think of this feature as Google Now or Siri with an ugly name.

Office, Outlook and Photos will work across devices but still I don’t know many people who have Windows Phones and there are no much chance this will change soon. Running Office, Power Point on a phone is not a great experience, but it will get better, claims Windows VP Joe Belfiore. Outlook emails will look better and will be easier to use on phones, small tablets and all kinds of PCs and are touch friendly.

The next big thing is the all-new Project Spartan browser that won't find its way in the next week's Windows 10 update. It will come a bit later and it will be a lightweight browser that will let you write on the browser with a finger or a pen. You can share your comments with people and the reading list travels from devices to device. Not a game changer in any way.

The Photo application is updated and will make auto enhanced pictures, albums and will share them across your devices. The Start menu can be enlarged to fullscreen or back and the Settings application is redesigned.

Xbox experience will let you play Xbox games on a PC in your home. This is not bad but, it's kind of similar to Shield gaming and Gamestream that Nvidia introduced a year ago. This time it comes from Microsoft. DirectX 12 is part of Windows 10, but don’t hold your breath about any cool DX 12 games anytime soon. The earliest you will be able to play well on Windows 10 is when the official release comes later this year and even then it will take a few quarters to see true DirectX 12 games.

Microsoft promised that Microsoft insider program members get an updated beta next week, but it didn’t tell about the actual date. We hope soon.
