British ISPs to filter porn by default

by on17 June 2013

Don’t worry, you can opt out

British internet service providers are about to start filtering pornographic content as a default. However, users will be able to opt out.

According to Wired UK, the move is part of a government push to force ISPs to make filtering standard across the industry. Since the rollout is completely voluntary, no new legislation is necessary.

It will be easy to disengage filter, all users will have to do is tick a few boxes and the idea is that kids won’t be able to get to it. However, kids tend to be more tech savvy than their parents so it seems pretty futile, since they’ll find a way.

In addition, the initiative has a few loopholes, as access to peer-to-peer networks won’t be affected and they tend to feature quite a bit of porn, or so we are told.
