MediaTek reports record quarterly sales

Announces new 64-bit octa-core

Mobile chip maker MediaTek has reported another record quarter. The company posted $1.98 billion in consolidated results for Q3, up 6.1 percent sequentially. September saw a slight dip, with shipments falling to the lowest point since June. Analysts blame the decline on seasonal trends.

MediaTek's shipments of 4G LTE chips are said to be good. The company has already secured orders from several leading vendors, such as Lenovo, Vodafone and TCL. Smartphone chips currently account for 55-60 percent of MediaTek's revenue. However, MediaTek is tapping other markets and it is now the fourth biggest supplier of tablet SoCs.

Although the MediaTek brand is usually associated with entry-level and mid-range chips, the company has started offering a number of chips for pricier devices.

The new MT6795 is a good example. It is a 64-bit octa-core of the big.LITTLE variety, with 4K and 4G support to boot. The company says the chip can hit 2.2GHz and it uses LPDDR3 RAM at up to 933MHz.

There is still no word on the rest of the spec, but the chip is coming soon.
