iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users may want to skip iOS 8 for now

Performance is not very good just yet

Do you still have an iPhone 4S or iPad 2? Well, despite the fact that iOS 8 that was just released will work on your device, you might want to wait a little while before updating as the user experience on these devices isn’t what you would expect. In fact it is simply slower and you might want to be prepared for some glitches with iOS 8 on these devices as the hardware from 2011 might be a little too old.

Since the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2 are older devices with an older CPU, features like Handoff, AirDrop, and Metal Graphics will not be supported. In fact the 4S and iPad 2 use an OpenGL graphics and don’t support 64bit, while the latest Apple products support 64bit and use Metal Graphics.

Like with OS 7 on the iPhone 4, we could see Apple go back and work on tweaking iOS 8 to get it to run better on the older devices, but it is hard to say if Apple will actually do it or not. We suspect if enough people upgrade to the iPhone 6 from the 4S, we could simply see Apple choose to not invest the time tweaking iOS 8 for the iPhone 4S as it simply would not be worth the time if there are not enough customers still using the iPhone 4S.
