Microsoft to kill off Nokia brand

Lumia and Microsoft rule

A new leak from Microsoft suggests that the outfit is about to kill off the Nokia name and replace with just Microsoft and Lumia branding. According to a leaked internal document detailing Microsoft’s plan, Microsoft wants to make Nokia’s Lumia smartphones its own, and the Lumia name is well-known in the mobile world.

To be fair, since Redmond bought the outfit it has avoided mentioning the name of the former rubber boot maker. At the IFA 2014 press conference, where the Lumia 830 and Lumia 735 were both revealed, no one said Finland once. Sure you could see the name on the phones, but no one was pointing to them.

Word on the street is that Microsoft will drop the Nokia name and replace it with Lumia and Microsoft co-branding for the next round of hardware releases. This would coincide with a rumoured plan to drop the world “Phone” from “Windows Phone.”

This would fit in with the already announced plans to merge all Microsoft’s operating systems together and create a unified app store. These alterations are expected to begin with the introduction of Windows 9. However the first Lumia-only phones announced before then and will have to factor in Redmond’s long term plans.
