Google launches second wave against Microsoft

More enterprise cloud than you can poke a stick at

Search outfit Google has released a second wave of products targeting Microsoft’s enterprise cloud.

Dubbed Google for Work the new batch replaces Google Enterprise. In addition to the traditional Google Apps covering collaboration and email, Google for Work will serve cloud based systems with app deployment, virtual machines and big data.

The system turns Google's search engine so it skims through an internal database while Google Maps Pro offers visualisations and real time location services.

What makes this a little different is that the new Google for Work offering also includes hardware, with businesses being encouraged to use Android and Chrome OS for laptops and desktops.

Of course if they managed it, Redmond would be in deep trouble.

In announcing the service, Google's executive chairman Eric Schmidt said, "We never set out to create a traditional 'enterprise' business - we wanted to create a new way of doing work. So the time has come for our name to catch up with our ambition.

"As of today, what was called Google Enterprise is now, simply, Google for Work. When we use the tools that make our lives easier - Google Apps, Maps, Search, Chrome, Android, Cloud Platform and more - work gets better. And that's what we're working on - the best of Google, now for work."
