Samsung unveils new Exynos parts

Octa and hexa cores

Samsung didn’t say much about the SoC used in the new Galaxy S5, but Qualcomm quickly confirmed that the new flagship is powered by the Snapdragon 801.

Samsung then announced another version, an octa-core. However, it did not say much about the actual part used in the band-aid Galaxy. The South Korean giant has now officially unveiled the new chip, along with yet another Exy 5 version with six CPU cores.

The Exynos 5422 is the new octa-core and to be honest it’s not very spectacular. It looks a bit like the original octa with somewhat higher clocks – 2.1GHz for the A15 cores and 1.5GHz for A7 cores. All eight cores can be used simultaneously and the chip supports 4K video.

We find the Exynos 5260 a bit more interesting. It features six CPU cores. Four of them are Cortex A7 cores clocked at 1.3GHz, while the other two cores are A15s clocked at 1.7GHz. The 5260 is destined for the Note 3 Neo.

Both chips are manufactured in 28nm and Samsung is still not saying anything about the GPUs used in them.
