15 EA titles to apparently skip Wii U release

Written by David Stellmack

Efforts abandoned to get Frostbite 3 running on Wii U

DICE apparently tried to get the Frostbite 2 engine running on the Wii U, according to a Twitter account from DICE technical director Johan Andersson. Andersson says that the Frostbite 2 engine was not running well on the Wii U, so it was decided to abandon the effort to get Frostbite 3 running on the Wii U. While some testing was apparently done using the Frostbite 2 engine, the results were not very promising so it was decided to not head down that path.

According to Frostbite technical director Stefan Boberg, EA has 15 games in development that are using the Frostbite engine. The titles include the just-released Army of Two: Devil’s Cartel, as well as Battlefield 4, Mass Effect 4, Dragon’s Age 3, a new Need for Speed title, and unannounced, but just recently unveiled Star Wars titles from DICE and Visceral, as well as a number of other titles that get EA to that 15 number. None of them will be coming to the Wii U unless something changes.

It would be hard to see EA want DICE to continue working on optimizing and tweaking Frostbite to get a dubbed down version to run on the Wii U, but it is hard to say what the future might hold. We suspect that based on what was said by Andersson, producing a Wii U version of the engine isn’t high on their priority list at the moment.
