Intel confirms 40 touchscreen ultrabooks in pipeline

by on01 August 2012

Pricing for entry level models to hit $699

In spite of some gloomy predictions, Intel’s ultrabook offensive is showing no signs of running out of steam.

The company unveiled some of its ultrabook plans at the Intel Ultrabook Symposium in Taipei and confirmed a few tidbits previously leaked in roadmaps.

VP of Intel Architecture Group Navin Shenoy told netbooknews.com that 35 ultrabook designs have hit retail so far, out of a total of 140 design wins. He pointed out that Intel is transitioning to Ivy Bridge processors, so first generation ultrabooks, based on Sandy Bridge parts, should sell for as little as $699 in time for back-to-school.

In addition to affordable Sandy ultrabooks, Intel is hoping to spice things up with 40 touchscreen enabled Windows 8 ultrabooks. They should appear by the end of the year and their success will depend on Windows 8 acceptance.

Looking down the road Intel will introduce Haswell parts, the first 22nm SoC chips for PCs. Shenoy claims next generation Haswell systems will consume up to 20 times less power than Ivy Bridge while idling.
