Kin sales were pathetic

by on08 July 2010

Estimates range from 503 to 10,000 units
A few days ago Microsoft’s Kin was mowed down in the prime of its youth and although nobody expected it to be a huge success, the decision to kill it off just weeks after launch proved to be quite embarrassing for Redmond.

We all know sales were bad, but they appear to have been much worse than even the most pessimistic predictions. A week ago CNET reported that the number of sold Kins was somewhere between 1,000 and 10,000. As if this wasn’t bad enough, TechSpot is reporting that the number was even lower, 503 to be exact.

The figure sounds too low to be believable, but we’re grown accustomed to good and bad surprises from Microsoft. An unnamed Microsoft employee said that sales were horrible and couldn’t even cover the expense of the launch party.

"As an employee, I am embarrassed. As a shareholder, I am pissed," the employee reportedly said.

So here’s a tip for anyone who actually bought a Kin. Hold on to it. It might become a valued collectable or a good museum exhibit some day.
